Biography
of Soldini Silvio
Silvio
Soldini was born in 1958 in Milan, where he enrolled at the University
to study political science. At the age of 21 he abandoned his studies
and travelled to New York to attend a cinema course.
After directing several short films (including Drimage), he
returned to Milan and in 1983 filmed Paesaggio con figure, his
first 16 mm medium-length feature film, which he presented at a number
of festivals including Locarno and Bellaria.
In 1985, he began his documentary activities with Voci celate.
The same year he created a splendid female portrait in Giulia in
ottobre, a medium-length film that won the first prize at Bellaria.
Soldini made his full-length film debut with The Peaceful Air of the
West (L’aria serena dell’ovest) in 1989. The film, presented in
the official selection at Locarno, won major awards at various
international film festivals.
In 1993 he repeated this success with A Soul Split in Two (Un’anima
divisa in due), presented in competition at the Venice Film
Festival, where the lead actor Fabrizio Bentivoglio won the Volpi Cup
for best actor. In 1997 he directed Le acrobate, which again won
major awards and was presented in competition at Locarno. |
