Biography of Paolo Virzì
Paolo Virzì was born in Leghorn in 1964
and studied Letters and Philosophy at the University of Pisa. He gained a diploma in scriptwriting
at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome in 1987.
Author of stories and scripts for the cinema, he made his directing debut in 1994
with "Living It Up (La bella vita)" (for which he also wrote the story and script together with Francesco Bruni), presented at the
Venice Film Festival.
In 1995 he directed "Ferie d'agosto",
which won the David di Donatello award for the
best film of 1996. Once again he wrote the story and script in collaboration with Francesco Bruni.
In 1997 he directed "Hardboiled Egg (Ovosodo)" with the assistance of one of his teachers, Furio Scarpelli, to a screenplay written by Francesco Bruni.
Presented at the Venice Film Festival,
the film won the Grand Special Jury prize and was one of the most successful Italian
films of the season.
In
1999 he directed the film "Kisses and Hugs (Baci e
Abbracci)", starring Francesco Paolantoni and Edoardo
Gabriellini. In 2002 he was the director of "My
name is Tanino" filmed in Italy, Canada and the
United States. The film, written together with Francesco Bruni
and Francesco Piccolo stars Corrado Fortuna making his screen
debut and an international cast of co-stars.
