Eugenio Finardi
Cinquant'anni

by Francesco Troiano

Rebel music

Records, at times, come about for the most heterogeneous reasons. Take "Cinquant'anni" for example, the latest musical offering from  Eugenio Finardi, with which right from the name of the album the artist celebrates a milestone in his life (even if the celebrations do come somewhat late, given his birthday fell on the  16th July). The idea for this CD actually came as a result of a series of conversations between the Milan singer-songwriter and Angelo Carrara, his lifetime friend and producer: it was Carrara who pointed out to Finardi that many of his old songs, when listened to, weren't at all dated.
So why not remake them, perhaps with more modern arrangements? No sooner said than done, a team comprising Carrara, Vittorio Cosmi, Finardi himself and his companion, Patrizia Convertino, set to work: in the end 13 songs, chosen from the artist's least well known pieces, were chosen to be included.
"This is not a "best of"", Finardi is eager  to point out, "it's just a compilation of songs that would otherwise have been forgotten, also because the dynamics of today's record industry means that old records tend to disappear from circulation altogether".
And so, much to the joy of nostalgic Finardi fans, there are superb old numbers like "Afghanistan", "Scuola", "Trappole", "Come un animale", "Sulla strada", "Quando stai per cominciare", "A mio padre", "Affetto", "Diesel", "Cuba", "Zucchero", "Non diventare grande mai", "La paura del domani": the songs are mostly taken from the mid Seventies, from albums that include "Diesel"  and "Roccando rollando".
Superb musical arrangements benefit from the contribution of new guitarist, Massimo Martellotta, and that of Vittorio Cosma (production, arrangement, keyboard and more): the results are at times surprising and undeniably classy. In addition, Finardi is still involved in the Portuguese folk song project, working with Francesco Di Giacomo and Marco Poeta: proof, were it needed, of the great variety of interests of this ever-dynamic artist with a natural curiosity for the world.
